Ed Byrd, aka “The Byrdman” was born in North Carolina, but has lived most of his life in South Carolina, having lived briefly in Illinois, New York and Texas. He calls South Carolina his home.
Ed began his radio career in 1970 but had broadcasting in sight at the age of 4 when he recalls sitting on the steps of his home in Charleston pretending to be a disc jockey. At age 14 he called a radio station inquiring of the announcer, who just happened to be a managing partner of the station, what it would take to become an announcer. The man told him he had to pass an FCC exam to obtain a license which was the standard for the time back then. Well, he sent off for the study guide, studied for the exam, went to the FCC office in Savannah, took the exam and passed it the first time. He got his license and got hired by the man that told him what he needed to do to become an announcer. He went on to work as a television director and engineer.
Ed has been on the air in Columbia since 1995 having worked previously at radio stations in Aiken and Augusta. A former college graduate with degrees in nuclear engineering technology and management Ed finds his broadcasting time as a getaway to spend fun times with his listeners. He enjoys being with his family and friends, reading, listening to music, watching sports and getaways to Charleston and Nashville.
Ed is a proud member of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame.
